I have always been here, but yes...I will join you.

I was about eleven years old and I remember my mother telling me that I would always have my heart broken. I thought that it was the cruelest thing to say to someone. She said that it was cruel, but true because she had never seen such a selfless soul in her lifetime. That people were not fair and the world would never be ready for the kind of love I was so willing to give. It took me a very long time and a lot of heartache to see how right she was. However, I have never wanted to change who I am. I still trust until you give me reason not to, love with all of my heart and stay true to myself. The more sisters to embrace and love, the better.

Reminds me so much of Audre Lorde. "We have to consciously study how to be tender with each other until it becomes a habit because what was native has been stolen from us, the love of Black women for each other." Why has this become so hard for us to do? Why are we taught we must only be competitive and not compassionate with each other?
